Slaying Giants

The LORD himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.

Exodus 14:14

If I could sit with you and ask you what your life has been like, I’m confident that the tale would include triumphs, tragedies, successes, losses, difficult situations and relationships. I would share with you a few of my own ups and downs, and as we talk it would be obvious that we have a lot in common!

Right now, life kind of feels like more of an uphill battle, more loss, more fear, more impossible than good. COVID-19 has come stomping into each of our lives – into every life on this planet – and is threatening everything and everyone we hold close to our heart, rely on for daily sanity, and has certainly decimated that thing we were calling ‘normal’.

My phone has an app that I used to think was handy. Any time there is a news article about my community, or my interest, a notice pops up to let me know I need to read. And, I must say, in the early days of COVID I read every bit of information! Knowledge is good. Staying informed is vital. However, I quickly learned that there was a lot out there the world said I needed to know about NOW but it wasn’t factual, helpful, or even accurate! I found myself spiraling down into despair and fear.

A few weeks ago, I was listening to my favorite music channel and a question caught my ear – ‘what giants are you fighting today?’. WELL, let me tell YOU!!! I thought. As God often does, this was a simple question that He would craft into my rescue.

That night I sat with God and reviewed the story of David and Goliath. A nation frozen in fear by the impossible; forgetting every. single. thing God had done to preserve, provide, rescue. The giant in front of them captured their attention and their fears completely, and derailed their faith walk. God could have done some amazing act like sending fire from heaven, or opening up the ground, or striking down the enemy with lightening in a show of His power. But He chose, instead, to use a young boy, a shepherd, a simple, unrefined, untrained young man with a mighty faith in God.

David grabbed up stones, confident, not in his ability to change the world, but grounded firmly in his first-hand solid knowledge of God’s strength and desire to rescue His children.

As COVID stomps through our lives, leaving destruction, death, fear, and uncertainty in its wake, I want to encourage you to pick up what you know about God, brush off that faith, and choose to walk boldly into the battle ahead of you. Sing out your belief in the God who saves, the Brother who made a way, and the Holy Spirit who brings courage and comfort. Throw every promise in your arsenal at the giant in your life. Be confident that you are not walking alone.

Here are some rock-solid promises to throw at your giant today!

Isaiah 41:10

So do not fear, for I am with you;

do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you;

I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Genesis 50:20

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Isaiah 40:31

but those who hope in the Lord

will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

they will run and not grow weary,

they will walk and not be faint.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
